Artist Statement on "Cities"
Artist Statement on "Cities"
My work explores the loss of nature as it should be, natural. Working only in monochrome I use charcoal: a substance earthy and raw, yet it took the death and the burning of a tree to produce it. I draw the night sky- and how it is perceived differently in every city across the world. I draw the night sky exactly as you see it in each city. Polluted and neglected cities, say Bakersfield or Aurora, are faint and star-less, while sustainable and conscious cities, say San Francisco or Seattle, are star-full and bright: exactly as how they look in each place. My art raises displays to the reality of how our own actions have directly affected how we perceive every part of our own world, including the night-sky.
